Pyrenees

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Phew!! that was a very long car journey indeeed!
I have just arrived home from a week long training camp with my Orange Monkey Cycling team mates courtesy of www.pyreneescycling.com one of our many loyal sponsors. On this camp we were joined by Rourke Croeser a very fast South African who has won many championships within his home land.

As usual the week flew by with magnificant Cols to ride up including the Solour and the Tourmalet and even greater off road decending which was a nice reward for all the on road accending. As usual my Cannondale Taurine took to the varying demands of the Pyrenees in its stride and was a joy to ride!!

Next stop is Plymouth for the last round of the British Mountain Bike Series.

Cannondale make great walking sticks!

Monday, June 7th, 2010

That was frustrating! Last Saturday i didn’t even complete one lap of the hilly 6km course based at Margam Park in the heart of South Wales.
Preparations for the race went to plan and i was feeling very confident as we were called up to our grid positions.
The only thing that was not going to plan was the weather, during Friday night the course went from being bone dry to soaking wet and incredibly slippery especially on the descents! And that’s where the weekend took a turn for the worse.
About 3km into the first of the six laps we had to complete, i was negotiating a slippery off camber decent which in hind sight i was taking to fast for the conditions, I slid sideways and landed on my right hand side in the undergrowth with a thump, still clipped into my pedals.
As i unclipped myself from my Cannondale Taurine i felt a sharp pain from my lower leg, i glanced down i could see blood gusshing out from a hole in my shin and a white shiny thing??……………..  my shin bone!
I used my Cannondale as a walking stick as i hobbled down the single track trying to stay out of my competitors way. I made it to the medical point at the bottom of the decent where a marshall radioed for medical assistance and from there i was taken to A&E. Five stitches later and a two hour drive back home, I’m typing this blog reflecting on what could have been. Before the accident i felt great, positioned perfectly for the the single track in ninth position waiting to pounce on one of Margam Park’s long steep climbs. But as they say ‘that’s racing’ and although I’m fed up of typing this, i am still full of motivation and firmly believe i can finish inside the top ten this year at National level. I have the equipment and the team behind me to do it and with that in mind i will not stop trying!
I have a compulsory two weeks off from any training so i have been using this time to clean and service my training and race bikes, i think my local bike shop are sick of the sight of me! Its good to have this break although it is not wanted. I will  be back better than before, after all it has been a busy year with a lot of international racing.
My next event is the Welsh championships which takes place in Buith Wells on the Sunday 27th June.
I will be using this race as preparation for the fourth round British National Series which take place in Dalby Forest the weekend after.
Team mate and current Welsh Champion Ben Roff  will be looking to defend his jersey, which i know he will do right down to the finish line! Best of look to him and my other team mate Alex Baker. This young fellow is full of racing and has suffered with some rotten luck this year but has copped with it like a true pro, i think Dalby will suit ‘the mag’ down to the ground, quite literally.

For now, Full Gassss!!!

Midlands Regional MTB Cross Country Champion 2010!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Whats happening with the weather recently?
A couple of weeks ago i was training in full winter clothing but last week it was back to just a jersey and a pair of shorts! Crazy!
This leads me into last weekends shenanigans. I was competing in the second round of the Midland XC series which also incorporated the Midlands Regional Championships at a picturesque place called Mansell Lacy, about 5 miles the the west of Hereford.
It was a scorching Sunday afternoon but my legs were feeling good and i was confident of a podium position.
I was also safe in the knowledge of the huge tanning potential this race had to offer with a very long fire road climb in the glaring sunshine. The profile of the course is best describe as a triangle, with lots of off camber single track and bomb holes to keep things interesting. The race started at 14:30 and as the gun fired my legs felt in good shape as i accelerated onto my teammates (Paul) wheel giving me a great slingshot into the first single track decent in first position. As the six lap race progressed i slipped into 3rd and this is where i would remain until the finish.I didn’t have the legs on this occasion to hold off Johnathon Pugh (first overall) and George Budd (second overall) but the battle will resume this weekend at Margam Park i am sure! On the flip side i was the first midlands rider home which meant i clinched the 2010 Midlands Regional Championships and with that a cracking trophy. My trophy cabinet was in need of a little updating!

I’m feeling confident and more motivated than ever to achieve my other goal which is to finish in the top ten of a National round this year. Margham Park has always been good to me over the years, i have finnished on the podium more than once. It consists of super steep climbs and fast single track descents (much like Mansell Lacy!). You never know exactly how the race will pan out for you but my build up to the event has been perfect and i’m feeling strong so here it goes…………..

Ride Hard, Have Fun!

3 weekends, 3 international races!

Attacking through the Bluebells at Wasing Park.

Attacking through the Bluebells at Wasing Park.

Phew!! its been a busy three weeks for myself and my team mates on the Orange Monkey Cycling Team.
As you can see from my previous blog i competed in Round One of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup which was nerve racking but satisfying on so many different levels. I finally achieved my dream of competing with the worlds best but not only that the World Cup hasn’t visited the UK for about 10 years, so it was great to be a part of the circus and competing in front of your home crowd.
To cap of my World Cup campaign we set of for the second round in Houffalize, Belgium a week later. The Belgium’s love there cycling and the support and encouragement they gave me was amazing, even though i didn’t understand a word they were saying! It was a whirl wind couple of weeks which was totally absorbing and one i would love to re-live!
The last race of this three week block was in Reading at a place called Wasing Park.  A 6km loop of fast, flowing single track with only 3 or 4 short punishing climbs per lap, it was going to be a punishing race but compared to what I’ve been used to over the last couple of weekends a little bit refreshing to be racing with people i recognise. I managed to finish 15th out of 35 starters, not exactly what i was hoping for but i dropped time due to bad positioning going into the first section of  single track which i need to work on for the future. All in all, a solid weekend for the team.
Overall i am happy with what i have got out of the last three races and i have gained so much more experience at world level which is certainly helping in my domestic campaign!
Well…. that was brief, i will fill you in on how i get on at Margham Park for the third round of the British Cross Country Series in more detail, but for now…

Thank you and much love!!

Orange Monkey – Dalby World Cup Round 1

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

chris andrewsAfter weeks of preperation the UCI World Cup came to Dalby Forest in England and for the Orange Monkey team it was to be their very first World Cup experience. The team set off on Friday morning with Chris, our featuring rider and support from Paul, Will and Alex. As a team we have waited a long time to get into this position so there were nerves all round but none more so for Chris who had worked incredibly hard over the past 18 months with the team to get to the level required to race a World Cup. Friday morning was perfect, the sun was out, the traffic reasonable and the team in bouyant mood looking forward to a great weekend of racing.

On arrival we went to pick up our passes from the accreditation centre and then it was straight onto course. Chris took in two practice laps of the dry dusty course, which he already knew back to front after practicing some weeks ago in the pouring rain. Once practice had finished we made our way into Pickering, where Paul was set to race the Pro Sprint Eliminator. Once the rest of the team had watched Paul race around the streets against the worlds best riders it was time to head back to the Hotel for some food and rest ahead of another big day tommorrow.

Saturday morning was early practice so breakfast and a ride over to the venue for Chris followed by one more lap of the course and he was as ready as he would ever be. The afternoon saw Steve James take an incredible 3rd place in the Junior race which had us all optimistic of what could be achieved. The day flew by and soon we were back at the hotel setting Chris up for one final spin on the turbo trainer and some last tweaking of his Cannondale Taurine race machine and it was off to bed early.

chris Breakfast sunday morning was a touch quieter than usual with the tension mounting. The team made there way to the race venue leaving Chris at the hotel with his bike to stay relaxed until it was time for him to start the short ride up to the race venue. Once there, he would complete an intense warm up and make some last minute preperations before being called to the staging area for the race of his life. Will took his position amongst the melee in the main feed zone up in the arena while Paul and Alex took the long journey to the back of the course to the second technical area at the bottom of Medusa’s Drop.

Finally the race was underway and it was now down to Chris. He did well to avoid an early pile up as 180 riders hurtled around the short start loop before entering the course proper. Chris held his position well enetering Medusa’s Drop in a good position and maintaining a steady pace around 4 laps before being stopped as the 80% rule kicked in. After a heavy cold two weeks ago it has been a tough time getting him fit for the race so it was a very positive performance and a magnificent experience for both Chris and the team.

The team now head to Houffalize in Belguim next weekend to do it all over again as they look to gain vital experience ahead of next year.

Orange Monkey would like to thank both Simon Burney and Martyn Salt for their help and support in our first world cup and for organising a fantastic return to World Cup racing in the UK.
