Junior Tour of Wales!
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010Back after along weekend in Wales doing probably one of the hardest races I have done… ever! The first day consisted of a 4.5 mile time trial, I was meant to start at 12.15 but it was moved to 11.15 and i was told this at 11.10 so had no time for a warm up and rushed to the start line to get ready. I managed a reasonable time in the end and finished mid way in the results however I would of liked to of done much better. The second stage of the day was a 46 mile point to point course which was very hilly and very tough. With lots of attacks throughout the day and i quick pace set i found my self out the back of the main peloton with quite a few other riders with about 5 miles to go. Not an ideal start to the tour but not bad for my first road race.
The second day again had two stages, the first of which was a tough, hilly circuit race with a head wind on the down hill so you were constantly working. The pace from the start was super quick and almost straight away the pack had split in half. eventually smaller groups formed and I managed to keep my self in a decent position to finish in the top 60. The second stage was a much flatter 50 mile point to point race. midway through you did two loops of a very flat A road. The pace through the whole day was super quick but i was able to keep with the pack this time. The final hill to the finish was a long drag, i settled in to my own pace and after a slow start finally started picking people off. In the end i finished in the top 70 which was much better than the day before.
The final day was the toughest, my legs were tired but I wasn’t going to let the pack get away over the 58 mile stage. The hills came through out the whole day and were super tough. A lot of riders cracked and were unable to keep with the pace. At the end was the biggest and steepest hill. The main pack managed to drop me with a high pace at the very bottom but as the climb went on i got stronger. I managed to climb back up past the support cars and then continued to climb past riders untillIi eventually made it in to 53rd place, my best result of the tour!
I was really pleased with the result as it was my first road race and really enjoyed it. The supersix was perfect for the ride and made it even more enjoyable!
Training Hard!
Tuesday, August 17th, 2010Been really pushing my self so i am ready for the junior tour of wales. All though road is not my favourite sort of racing i am looking forward to it and will give it my best. I have my supersix so nothing can go wrong! Just hope the legs hold up in my first tour!
Great Weekend!
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010I have just returned from my weekend in Wales at the Welsh MTB championship race where I was defending my title as Junior Champion! I have been training hard leading up to this race really working on my hill climbing and technical skills as I knew the course would be tough.
I got there and just to make things interesting it was one of the hottest days of the year! So I did my practice lap of the course to find my self climbing from the start and then after a quick decent and bit of fire road straight on to a mammoth climb again! However it was a relief when I got to the top knowing it was all downhill to the finish. As I waited for my race to start I sat in the shade making sure I was hydrated before the race.
It was a mass start with Elites both male and female and vets and a few other cats. After the slow start working my way through people I was in a secure second and just biding my time. Making sure to keep drinking I slowly pulled my way back up to first place rider at the end of the first lap and then was able to attack and drop him on the second lap. I pushed hard for the last two laps to keep my lead secure. Making sure I was hydrated the whole time really helped with the heat and did not suffer like many of the other racers did.
I came across the line in first! Keeping my title as Junior Welsh MTB Champion! As usual the scalpel had done it’s job and handled the terrain perfectly. I am yet to find a course it isn’t good on. I was really pleased with my performance and my form looks good for the next round of the NPS at Dolby.

Podium!
Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010Back from a long weekend in Margam, three races in one weekend was hard work but I enjoyed it. Went out for practice on the friday on a nice dry, quick running course to wake up the next morning and see it had rained heavy and the course had become a mud pool! I had a slow start but eventually got in to a rythm and found my self fighting for third place on the podium and managed to attack and hold the gap on the last lap!
The relay on the Saturday night was great fun, the team managed to get a secure third even after I messed up at the start, but the team pulled it back. The marathon on the Sunday was a very hard race, I went round with my two team mates Alex and Paul. We worked together to get 4th 5th and 6th after a puncture on the last lap losing us third place.
Overall a successful weekend for my self and looking to go on place further next National!
NPS
Thursday, May 27th, 2010Looking forward to the next round of the NPS at Margam Park! I really like the course with it’s long climbs followed by long single-track descending. it really suits my style of riding and all though I haven’t had a good race at Margam, but I am up for it and hope to get a top 5! Should be a fun and exciting race, will report back on how it goes after the weekend!
